President C. Santa Maria called the meeting to order at 10:38 am.
C. Santa Maria made a motion to adopt a flexible agenda, given the amount of time available this morning—sec by R. Loue—passed.
A. Avellino made a motion to approve the minutes for May’s meeting—sec by V. Fedeli—passed.
President’s Report: C. Santa Maria began the meeting with a quick tour of the new website, which contains a number of new and helpful features.
Our summer included the sad loss of Bridget Hull, a guidance counselor at LMHS, whose battle with cancer was courageous and whom we mourn as a great and dedicated colleague.
We begin today the second—and final—year of our contract, which means that we will again be engaged in the formal bargaining process. We expect to complete this process and settle on a contract before the end of the school year this time around, and we have scheduled a general membership meeting for May 31. As part of this process, we will schedule unit meetings at each building so we can update members on the progress of our work. Please make sure your home email address is on file so you can receive the LMEA blast when we send it out.
The LMEA is looking for leaders. Our current leadership is experienced, but any healthy organization needs a steady infusion of youth and new ideas. Please consider taking a role with us so we can continue to be the strong union we are.
VP Support: V. Fedeli welcomed everyone back, and invited new support staff to stand and be recognized. Support staff members are currently scheduled to work an extra day this year, which is a mistake—pending confirmation, December 30 will not be a work day.
Treasurer: D. Mandarino made a motion to accept the Treasurer’s report. Motion passed.
1st Vice President: A. Avellino reminded professionals we are required to complete the 2 hour workshop, and stressed it is ONLY a two hour requirement: part one should be complete in 30 minutes, part two is a 60 minute meeting with administrators, and part three is a lesson plan that should take no more than 30 minutes for you to complete. Please adhere to the timelines, even if you don’t complete a section in its entirety. Please contact Aimee if you have questions or need clarification.
New Business: After a brief introduction detailing her important and groundbreaking work with PSEA over the years, C. Santa Maria presented the LMEA Friend of Education Award to Linda Weaver, former Mideast Region president and current candidate for state representative of the 150th district in Pennsylvania. We thank her, and we support her in her campaign to continue working on behalf of the children in public education in this state.
The meeting was adjourned at 11:12 am.
