March 12, 2018
NOTE: These minutes are also available online at www.lmeaonline.org.
President C. Santa Maria called the meeting to order at 4:08 pm.
Aimee Avellino made a motion to approve the minutes from February—sec by V. Fedeli--passed.
President’s Report: C. Santa Maria gave the following report:
We have now lost four days to weather, which means—if the past is a guide—that the district calendar will be adjusted so that Tuesday 6/19 becomes the last student day and Thursday 6/21 becomes the final professional development day. As in the past, if you have existing travel plans you should be able to use a personal day with special consideration for the final day.
The LMEA was disappointed with the district’s delay in dismissing students and staff on Friday, March 2. While there’s not a formal avenue for us to grieve the issue, we can remind staff that in situations like that, you cannot be required to remain at school after the end of our contract day to supervise students. It is ultimately the administrators’ responsibility to stay with the students until they can safely leave the building.
We are scheduled to present our case to the arbitrator on April 4, as will the district. After that, the arbitrator will have a few weeks to produce a final report. After that hearing, we will be able to advise the membership on possible next steps. In the meantime, continue to submit your examples of LMEA accomplishments to Russ Loue.
Please see the Apple Core for detailed information about snow day make-up, MAC conference, Safety Task Force, and the upcoming LMEA elections.

If you did not order a shirt yet, there’s still time to see your building rep so we can get you one before spring break. STF still welcomes new voices and representation.
Elections: The NEA-RA is in Minneapolis this year, from June 30-July 5. Please let Arlene know at firstname.lastname@example.org if you’d like to be a delegate, prior to March 14. Your expenses will be covered by the LMEA.
CNC: R. Loue published a blast last week with some information about the arbitration process. L. Giaquinto reminded us what the administrators got in their most recent contract, and we are now 425 days into the negotiation process.
FAC: C. Santa Maria announced he’ll be assembling a budget committee to produce a budget for approval in May. The committee will need to account for the strong likelihood that the Supreme Court will strip unions of the ability to collect fair share fees. We’ve talked a lot about how that will make things difficult, and we need to get together and pursue solutions for the future.
Health & Safety: Radon testing was performed in all schools. While some of the results are not back yet, we have seen excessive levels in at least two schools, Penn Valley and BCMS. Remediation is underway, with plans for more permanent intervention to begin as early as spring break.
