LMEA EXECUTIVE COUNCIL MEETING MINUTES

January 14, 2008

President C. SantaMaria called the meeting to order at 4:05PM.

C. SantaMaria made motion to accept the December minutes – second by A. Flicker. Passed.

Officer’s Reports:

President’s Report: C. SantaMaria gave the following report:

• Additional 10 minutes of time starting 08-09 year. Looking as if the end of the student day will be 10 minutes later than it is now. The beginning of the day will likely not be affected. The time could be instructional but not sure yet.
• Thanksgiving Wednesday – High school principals dismissed staff early – some feelings of inequity have arisen in other buildings. The administration is considering a district-wide policy regarding this day next year.
• Seniority lists – Dr. Yoder will issue soon.
• Long Term Sub list – concern about LTS being passed over when contract positions become available. District tends to keep LTS for a second year if district thinks they have a chance to be hired in a contract position. Ultimately this is managerial prerogative. The building principals have a large say in these decisions. As per our contract, a LTS can request in writing a reason why they didn’t get the position they interviewed for.
• Vanguard is not getting out of carrying 403bs contrary to some rumors that have surfaced. We will continue to monitor electronic payments to 403b carriers in a timely manner.
• Applecore items were discussed. Some of these include the PSEA Grant Deadline is February 4. Global Connect call should be valid enough source in case of late opening/school closing. No longer can you put in for Personal Days on the day before the President’s Day holiday. February 15 th, 2008 is a holiday not an ISDO/GSDO day. April 10 LMEA Retirement Workshop is now full. More will be scheduled next year. Also, again be very careful about what you post online on sites like Myspace, Facebook, etc.
• Possible health insurance premium co-pay next year – if the health insurance cost to the district increases by 8% or more professional staff will pay $25 per month for a family plan and support professionals will pay $12.50 per month.

VP Support: V. Fedeli gave the following report:

• Some of bus fleet is scheduled to move to the Connelly site. District is making efforts to get proper facilities there in a timely manner. District is against a deadline of February 1 st to move buses.
• The A372 (Clerical Aide) job description was released as a result of an ongoing grievance. If you are an A372 and are interested in reviewing this job description draft please contact Vic at fedeliv@lmsd.org or cell # 610-331-8015. When a list of volunteers is compiled Vic will schedule a meeting for this group at the LMEA office. If you have contacted Vic about working on this job description please do so again so your name will remain current on the list. Many thanks for your support and the members will be informed as other job descriptions are released.

Treasurer: D. Mandarino made a motion to approve the Treasurer’s report for December. Approved.

Committee Reports:

Constitution: NR

Elections: NP

IPD: NR

CNC: R. Loue reported their next meeting will be on January 31.

FAC: C. SantaMaria noted a report will be coming out in February.

Health & Safety: A. Flicker reported their next meeting will be at the end of January. Again please try to rectify issues within the building first before coming to the committee.

Legislation: NR but question about possible changes in timelines for school psychologists to complete evaluations from 60 school days to 60 calendar days – will be investigated.

Minority Affairs: M. Mixon reported the Minority Leadership Conference will be March 14-16 in Pittsburgh.

PACE: A. Pass reported on contributions so far. Generally contributions are greater this year. If you still want to participate, the contributions can only be in check/cash now – too late for deductions.

PR&R: P. Dawson reported that it’s evaluation time. Please report any unsatisfactories to Pete or Vic ASAP. Also, when considering a personal day please remember the 7 day rule – if you know more than 7 days in advance put it in AESOP 8+ days ahead of time.

Membership: D. Grumbine reminded and thanked reps to/for attention to membership lists.

CARE: M. Rios reported their next meeting is January 15 th.

Act 1: NR

NEA Read Across America: D. Mandarino reported they will present to each elementary school a set of 13 Dr. Seuss books and book marks to LM public libraries.

Education Foundation: D. Simon reported there is a need for volunteers at Bethel Academy. The Academy’s goal is to close the achievement gap. This is a good way to put ourselves out there in a positive way by helping the community. Anyone who can read can help. Contact them at bethelacademy@gmail.com. Also, the Foundation would like to hear from past grant recipients.

Bala Cynwyd: Member not notified of new vision coverage, and old forms are on the District website. Will be investigated.

Welsh Valley : NR

Lower Merion : Concern about method for reminding about Executive Council meetings – can we remind via email? – we can’t really use district email in this way. Also, there will be no access to some lots at LMHS soon due to construction. Possibly call ahead for information.
