EXECUTIVE COUNCIL MEETING, October 11, 2004

President D. Pendino called the meeting to order.
J. Cook made motion to approve the September Executive Council minutes – sec. by V. Fedeli– Approved.

Guest Speakers: Gene Schmidt & Al Campos- spoke about importance of Presidential & local elections Nov. 2nd and gave handout for distribution.

Officer’s Reports:
President’s Report: D. Pendino gave the following report:

  1. Ex. Coun. Offered a moment of silence in honor of Hank Plumly.
  2. Appointments: see bottom of Staff Development List for Health & safety and Conference Committees. ICC appointments on Member list. Hearing no objections, appointments are made.
  3. Concern re: Technology & General Membership Meeting at beginning of school. Ginny DiMedio responded that Tech Department was inundated with requests and needed to get their work done before the start of school.
  4. Technology will be combined with the Pool and will determine if there is a need for additional Reps.
  5. Use of 7 Hrs. – it is required in the contract that a plan is to be developed between LMEA and the District. Building Reps & the Principal should work out the use of time. The intent was to be used for the needs of LMEA & the District-jointly-. Please send Dom a copy of the Plan for your school in additional to the Superintendent.
  6. Post in your building info from PSEA Mideast Region Continuing Ed Program distributed to Bldg. Reps.
  7. Retirement Workshop – PSEA- Weds. 12/28/04, please distribute to any interested member.
  8. Act 48 – 5th year for certification – look for bookmark to remind members to check your Act 48 credits along with Oct. Ex. Council minutes.
  9. Board Presentation” Attached to Applecore is President’s presentation to the board re: air conditioning/cooling. Emphasis was placed on the impact to the children. Board responded that it will take info under consideration in the future.
  10. Letters sent to BC & WV re:” Middle School Open House during the hurricane (2hrs was given by the district for ISDO-GSDO)

VP Support Professionals: V. Fedeli gave the following report:

  1. Workshops – Also available for Instr. Aides and are appropriate for ESP portfolios.
  2. Outside agencies (can be in a school for up to 40 days. Call Victor regarding anything after that length of time.
  3. Kronos is creating problems in a few departments- if you do work in Food Services & Transportation – Keep your own journal records for reference in case of any problems that adjustments can be made.
  4. Nov. 17th – National Education Week – A proclamation will be posted on District Website.

VP Professional: A. Flicker reported that Oct. 18th is the New Staff Workshop @ Yang Ming in Bryn Mawr, from 4-6 pm. Invitations to new members were sent. Anyone else interested can e-mail Arlene if you would like to be added to the list by Weds. Oct 13th.

FAC: Office building purchase has been put on hold.
Health & Safety: No meeting has been set up yet from Superintendents office. Please continue to send concerns to A. Flicker or L. Gianquinto.
Legislation: G. Rosazza reported that 2/3 of population reported that they don’t understand the No Child Left Behind act and 44 % are in favor of Vouchers.
PACE: Forms will be distributed as soon as Payroll deduction dates are established.

CARE: M.Rios attended the meeting & has summary of meeting. There will be guest speakers at Oct 21st meeting.
Settlement Task Force: 1st meeting is Nov. 23rd @4:00 pm at LMEA Office – Belmont Hills School. They are still looking for reps from each building. E-mail Russ Louie if interested.
Read Across America: Anne Pass is chairing the committee – looking for readers to go out into the community…contact Anne with any ideas or interest. Suggestion that LMEA purchase books for Day Cares to give to the children when they are read to. If interested in having a group of your students participate in reading of RAA day, please contact ANNE.
SEAC: asked us to Appoint liaison – Elaine Brophy will represent LMEA.

Building Reports:
Belmont Hills: NR
Cynwyd: NR
Gladwyne: 1. Concern from Instructional aides not being eligible for recess captains’ positions. 2. Subs for aides are not available. Also no subs for Spec. Ed teachers when they are out. 3. Question regarding FLES in Elem Schools and whether or not it could be considered a Special period. 4. Custodial staff: the district wants to change a member’s hours again and how it is impacting everyone. – All will be investigated.
Merion: Concerns about recess captains- position remains unfilled if no interest.
Penn Valley: NR
Penn Wynne: 1. Question about salary difference in HS/MS Principal’s secretary vs. Elementary School Principal’s secretary. 2. Office personnel doesn’t get a substitute through AESOP why are there no subs required? 3. Many questions about the recording of Absences that were distributed on recent printouts from Admin. 4. What is the time frame required for work/repair requisitions? What is a reasonable amount of time? - All will be investigated.
Bala Cynwyd: Concerns regarding 6 classes and also substitutes.
Welsh Valley: NR
Harriton: 1. Power grade – a concern that the grading program was changes. Power school must be used to report your grades. Powergrade is not mandatory. 2. Superintendent suggested everyone use e-board but it is also not mandatory – Will be investigated.
Lower Merion: Concern about Technology & how services are provided.
