EXECUTIVE COUNCIL MEETING, April 19, 2004

President D. Pendino called the meeting to order at 4:06 pm.
D. Mandarino made motion to approve the March EC minutes. Second by V. Fedeli. – approved.

Officer’s Reports:

President’s Report: D. Pendino gave the following report:
1. Proposed budget for next year does not raise dues. Motion to recommend the proposed budget to the membership at May’s General Meeting. – Passed – Budget recommended.
2. The 25-year tribute will be held Monday May 3rd at the Merion Tribute House.
3. Building rep elections should be held prior to May’s Executive Council Meeting. Alternates can be appointed. Instruction and Curriculum (ICC) members are appointed. Staff Development Council (SDC) members are elected. Meetings for both are monthly. Elections for SDC should be conducted soon also.
4. The LMEA elections will be held Tuesday May 25th. Ballots will be made after the May 19th General Membership Meeting.
5. Membership lists and Applecore items were discussed.

VP Support: V. Fedeli gave the following report:
1. The ESP/NEA Conference was held in Charlotte in March. LMSD was recognized by
the EPA for its attempts at improving air quality with our fleet of natural gas buses.
2. Charles Thompson, Radnor SD bus driver, announced he will be running for NEA Director-At-Large with the election at the RA in July.
3. The MER ESP House of Delegates and the Minorities Affairs Conference both met in March. Both meetings provided worthwhile information and news from across the state.
4. NEA and PSEA have member benefit phone numbers and web sites. NEA’s is 1-800-637-4636 or www.neamb.com. PSEA’s is 1-877-538-6735 or www.psea.org.

VP Professional: C. Santa Maria gave this report which included his committee reports:
1. In the upcoming primary, PSEA is endorsing Arlen Spector in the race for Republican U.S. Senator from PA. This could be a close race.
2. PACE report – the awarding of the “President’s Cup” will be at the June Banquet. This coveted award will go to the building/unit with the highest percentage of contributing members. Donations must be in by April 30.
3. Labor Management Committee - Healthcare plan data will be coming soon.
4. Community Advisory Committee will meet on 4/21 – 2 new equal population high schools were proposed – probable redistricting – relocation of buses seems to be the major issue – board is scheduled to vote on plan by the end of May.

1st Vice President: A. Flicker briefly reported on the recent MER Negotiations workshop. This
workshop was quite informative and worthwhile.

Treasurer: D. Mandarino made a motion to approve Treasurer’s report for March. - approved

Committee Reports:

Elections: NP however elections information was given earlier in the meeting.
IPD: NR
CNC: NP – Chairs were at CAPS meeting. D. Pendino stated we are continuing to prepare for
negotiations. Subcommittee for tuition reimbursement is developing a fairer way of distributing money. The use of personal days was discussed. If you are denied/docked a personal day due to an emergency please contact the LMEA. Follow the procedures as stated in Article 21 Section D of the contract.

Health & Safety: A. Flicker reported their next meeting is scheduled for April 22nd. Contact her at her new school number 610-645-1439.

PACE: C. SantaMaria gave his report earlier in the meeting.
PR&R: P. Dawson briefly summarized the written report on current grievances. For Special Ed Teachers/Aides/IAs – Liz Stanley Swope will be in the LMEA Office Wednesday April 21st for questions.
Public Relations: NP
Social: L. McDevitt announced the Spring Banquet will be held Wednesday June 2 at Drexelbrook. Please let her know of anyone retiring this year.
Special Services: NP – but A. Flicker reported a new sign-up for BJ’s Warehouse membership will be coming out soon.
Sunshine: NR
Membership: NR
Care Committee: M. Rios reported on a summary by Lynne Partridge on diversity in the differentiated instruction training. Contact L. Partridge or Connie Majors for information on this topic. Dr. Tobin recently announced that the district is committed to dedicating a future Staff Development day to enlighten the staff on these issues.
Minority Affairs: D. Williams reported on the recent conference in Pittsburgh. The main topic was the 50th anniversary of Brown vs. Bd. Of Education. Funding inequities still exist – schools as well as other areas of society must strive to remedy these problems.

Special Ed Task Force: D. Pendino reminded of the upcoming meeting with Liz Stanley Swope.

Building Reports:
Belmont Hills: NP
Cynwyd: NR
Gladwyne: Concern about some AESOP errors are difficult to fix – will be investigated.
Merion: NR
Penn Valley: AESOP issue – subs inconsistently assigned for consecutive absences – will be investigated.
Penn Wynne: Question if the LMEA will answer phones for Channel 12 pledging? – will be checked but we haven’t been asked recently.
Bala Cynwyd: Custodian attire issue – clarification must come from the Director of Custodians. Also, multidisciplinary teacher who is certified is being told to take test to be “highly qualified”, being threatened with being removed from position. – will be investigated.
Welsh Valley: Concern about outside groups affecting curriculum/equipment use – ICC should investigate. Also, some would like the tech workshops to still be held even when there is low enrollment. Also, concern that some poorly performing subs keep coming back – will be investigated.
Harriton: An AESOP absence on snow day was not taken off – write HR and copy the LMEA.
Lower Merion: NR
B&G: NR
Transportation LM: NP but E. Lieber wanted to inform that Jerry Davis is the new route coordinator and things are going well.
