EXECUTIVE COUNCIL MEETING, MAY 12th, 2003

President D. Pendino called the meeting to order at 4:07pm.

Motion to accept April Executive Council Minutes – motion approved.

Officer’s Reports:

President’s Report: D. Pendino made the following report:

1. The MER 4th Annual Golf Classic will be held Tuesday June 24 at 8:30am at the Middletown Country Club in Langhorne, PA. Reps have registration information.

2. Building rep elections should be completed very soon – reps should report results to E. Brophy. New bldg reps should come to June’s EC meeting.

3. Assistant Superintendent search – D. Pendino was invited to provide feedback during the selection process – feedback forms were returned to Dr. Savidoff. A decision should be made soon.

4. Alfie Kohn will speak at LMHS at 7:30 PM on Tuesday May 27. Mr. Kohn is a renowned speaker and author who will speak on the issue of standardized testing.

5. LMEA run/walk is scheduled for the morning of May 18. If interested contact P. Dawson at LMHS.

6. LMEA and educational issues: the LMEA through a variety of committees addresses these issues. All meet during the school day. ICC, SDC, and Health and Safety are some of these committees. R. Carson expressed concern about more staff development for the support staff – M. Rios added that staff needs technology training. Contact J. Hay to help staff learn how to use technology. More technicians will be hired in the near future.

7. Gettysburg Leadership workshop will be July 27 to August 1. Let Dom know if you are interested in going.

8. Applecore items were discussed. Unit meeting for June will be at Penn Valley ES. It will likely be moved from June 4th to Monday June 2nd.

E. Brophy described the LMEA election procedures. The LMEA election will take place on Tuesday May 20th. Building reps should be sure to give each member the correct ballot form. Question raised about having the election on different days in different buildings. D. Pendino said it would be an issue of getting the ballots to the buildings on different dates. Concern about staff who are not in the building during voting hours. D. Pendino added that those staff should arrive at their building during voting hours if they want to vote.

VP Support: R. Carson reminded that members who receive any positive letter/commendations from principals/parents should consider saving these and put them into their personnel file in the Human Resources office. Members may add to their personnel file at any time.

VP Professional: NR

1st Vice President: C. SantaMaria noted that school board candidates have visited buildings after school hours in recent weeks. Suggested LMEA develop a questionairre to be given to final candidates in the November school board elections. C. SantaMaria made a motion to form an ad hoc committee for the purpose of creating this questionnaire. Seconded by B. Kohler. Passed. C. SantaMaria appointed chair of this committee by D. Pendino.

Secretary Support: NP – Lisa McDevitt is ill and we wish her a speedy recovery.

Secretary Professional: M. Stettner asked that professional and support attendees sign appropriate petitions to put candidates on the PSERS board.

Treasurer: D. Mandarino made motion to approve treasurer’s report. Approved.

Committee Reports:

CNC: D. Pendino added that if anyone has ideas of how to solve the substitute shortage they should contact him or one of the officers.

Health & Safety: A. Flicker reported their next meeting will be May 13th.

PACE: NR – but E. Brophy asked whom to contact if a member thinks they’ve had too much deducted. Contact D. Grumbine at the LMEA office.

PR&R: P. Dawson gave brief report of current grievances.
Public Relations: NR

Social: D. Mandarino said updated retiree lists have been sent to buildings periodically. If a person is leaving a position but not retiring they would not be considered retiring. D. Pendino added that everyone being honored must have someone speak for them at the banquet.

C. Rowland added that there will be a minority affairs hospitality tent at the PA House of Delegates on Saturday 5/18.

C. SantaMaria made a motion to adjourn – seconded by R. Carson. The meeting was adjourned at 5:26 pm.
